Ransomware attacks are piggybacking on unsecured IoT devices.
A report by Ben Dickson on The Daily Dot has eluded to the increase of Ransomware attacks due to the Internet of Things (IoT)
The IoT is essentially every device connected to the internet somehow, be that a smart tv, fridge, IP cameras to baby monitors. One of the biggest issues with the IoT is that security is usually an afterthought of design and not part of it. Leaving potentially hundreds of thousand of devices vulnerable to the malicious intent of online hackers.
The rise of threat of attacks on infrastructure, business and even your home, is due to the unsecured world of the IoT. Scenarios such as disruption to power grids, denial of service attacks on websites and critical business functions and even smart homes being taken over, are all plausible outcomes if nothing is done to prevent this.
As the threat has been projected to rise in the coming months Ben Dickson concludes that more needs to be done from all involved, otherwise it’s a disaster waiting to happen.
