A post appeared on Reddit by FallenMyst and he explained how he had started a new job listening to sound bites and deciding how well the text matches the voice input. He then realised that a pattern started to emerge and these sound bites he was listening to where commands people where giving to thier mobile devices. FallenMyst goes on to say;
“Guys, I’m telling you, if you’ve said it to your phone, it’s been recorded…and there’s a damn good chance a 3rd party is going to hear it.”
The things he describes of hearing range from the usual everyday things, innocent children asking Siri if she liked them and even disturbing ones, some people asked the software to have sex with them.
Should we be surprised ?, well you’re probably not i would assume. We found out last week some Samsung smart TV’s where actively listening the whole time and sending back the recordings. Fortunately in this case, the only things being recorded are the questions you and i ask, not a constant hot mic of everything we say and do. One positive of this though, is atleast the data isn’t identifiable, otherwise that would of opened up a whole new can of worms.
And additionally we all probably should of known this alot earlier, because in Apples terms of service atleast, it says the following:
“By using Siri or Dictation, you agree and consent to Apple’s and its subsidiaries’ and agents’ transmission, collection, maintenance, processing, and use of this information, including your voice input and User Data, to provide and improve Siri, Dictation, and dictation functionality in other Apple products and services.”
So maybe we should read these things abit more next time and we won’t get a nasty surprise like this.
